FLAVORS OF GOOD HEALTH: EXPLORING THE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF INDIAN SPICES

Indian kitchen is incomplete without a variety of essential spices. Every spice has its own flavoring and essence, and its addition or omission can literally make or break a dish. Along with altering the taste of the food, consist of innumerable medicinal benefits. Spices rather play an important role in medicinal, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and perfumery, and many more.  Spices also play a major role in curing diseases like, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, cancer.

Here is a list of spices that one must include and can spruce up their food to add that oomph factor and also gain benefits

Anise seeds
They are rich in iron and are a rich source of antioxidants. It is observed to mimic the effects of estrogen in the body, potentially reducing the harsh symptoms of menopause. Some of the compounds in anise seed may also help prevent bone loss.

Black pepper (kali mirchi)
They also known as the king of spices, promotes weight loss, helps relieve cold and cough, improves digestion, boosts metabolism, and treats many skin problems. Recent studies have found that black pepper is effective in managing cognitive decline and also boosts mood.

Fenugreek
(Methi)
Methi is an interesting herb with diverse uses and many potential health benefits. It improves digestion, is known to increase libido in men, promotes milk flow in mothers, helps those suffering from eating disorders and also reduces inflammation.

Cinnamon
(Dalchini)
It has been extensively studied for its anti-diabetic effects, as it helps regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. Additionally, cinnamon exhibits antimicrobial properties, aids digestion, and may contribute to reducing cholesterol levels, making it a valuable spice for overall health.

Turmeric
(haldi)
Turmeric, often referred to as the “Golden Spice of India,” contains a potent compound called curcumin. Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help reduce chronic inflammation, alleviate joint pain, support cardiovascular health, and even potentially inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Indian spices go beyond adding flavor to dishes; they have been treasured for their therapeutic properties for centuries. From turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties to cumin’s digestive aid, and cinnamon’s blood sugar regulation, incorporating these spices into your diet can have a profound impact on your well-being.
