In Manipur, two Manipur police commandos were killed and six others injured in an attack by armed terrorists in Moreh. The event took place in the early hours of Wednesday, when armed terrorists engaged state authorities with firearms and explosives.

The Manipur Police, via its official X handle, identified the martyred commandos as Somorjit Meetei and Takhellambam Sieleshwor Singh. The forces were reportedly confronting elements considered a threat to the state’s security and law and order.

In a statement, Manipur Police said, “Today (January 17, 2024) in the early morning, armed militants orchestrated a violent attack on the state forces, employing firearms and explosives in Moreh, Tengnoupal district. In the incident, one member of the 6th Manipur Rifles, Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei, was martyred in the line of duty. Further, another Manipur Police personnel of the 10th IRB, Takhellambam Sieleshwor Singh, was also martyred in the attack by the armed militants at Moreh.”

Six police personnel sustained injuries in the attack, and the security forces were actively engaging the inimical elements, according to the police statement.

In a separate incident in Thoubal district, an irate mob targeted the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion (3IRB), leading to three personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) sustaining bullet injuries. The injured BSF personnel, identified as Constable Gourav Kumar, ASI Sobram Singh, and ASI Ramji, were evacuated to Raj Medicity for medical treatment.

The Manipur Police noted that the mob attempted to breach Thoubal Police Headquarters, prompting security forces to use legal force to control the situation. The incidents have added to the already tense atmosphere in Manipur, where protests and violence have been reported recently.
