The Manipur government has extended the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services for two more days amid rising violence and tensions in the state. The suspension applies across seven districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, and Churachandpur, effective from 5:15 pm on Monday. Exceptions are being made for lease lines and FTTH connections serving government offices.
Internet Suspension Extended for Two More Days
In an official statement, the Manipur government cited the ongoing law and order situation as the reason for continuing the suspension of internet and mobile data services. The review of the situation over the past two days led to the decision to maintain the ban on services, including VSATs, broadband (IILL & FTTH), and VPN services. The suspension is scheduled to remain in effect until 5:15 pm on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Amid escalating violence, a curfew was imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East on Sunday, with restrictions remaining in place until further notice. The curfew follows reports of six fatalities over the weekend. Authorities have tightened security in the affected districts, with increased deployment of personnel, particularly around sensitive areas, including Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence and the Raj Bhavan.
Educational Institutions Closed
In response to the ongoing unrest, the Manipur Secretariat Higher and Technical Education Department ordered the closure of schools, colleges, and universities in Imphal West and Imphal East districts until Tuesday. This decision was taken after consultations with the Home Department, underscoring the severity of the current situation.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge of three critical cases linked to the recent violence in Manipur, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). These cases involve severe incidents, including the murder of a woman in Jiribam on November 8, an attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post on November 11, and the arson and killing of civilians in the Borobekra area on the same day. The NIA’s involvement signals the central government’s attempt to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level review meeting in New Delhi on Monday, assessing the current security challenges in Manipur. The meeting, attended by senior officials, focused on the latest developments and ongoing response measures in the state. This was the second consecutive review meeting since Sunday, highlighting the central government’s commitment to addressing the escalating violence and restoring stability in the region.
