In a distressing incident in Maharashtra’s Thane district, authorities have initiated legal action against a 40-year-old man, his parents, and four other family members for reportedly subjecting his wife to harassment and cruelty. The case, which has sparked outrage, centers around allegations of financial demands and emotional abuse.
The accused, along with his family, who are residents of Ampada in the Bhiwandi area, allegedly exerted pressure on the 35-year-old woman to procure money from her parents. When she declined their demands to seek financial support from her family, the victim claims she was subjected to relentless harassment and cruelty, as detailed in the First Information Report (FIR), according to an official statement from the Shanti Nagar police station. In her complaint, the victim also revealed that her husband had entered into a second marriage. Moreover, the man took the drastic step of disowning his daughter from his first marriage, casting doubts on her character. He reportedly went as far as undergoing a DNA test, along with his daughter, to ascertain paternity, as stated in the police report. Following the victim’s formal complaint, the police took action on Sunday, registering offenses against the man, his parents, and four other family members under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sections include IPC 498(a) for subjecting a wife to cruelty, IPC 494 for marrying a second time during the lifetime of the first spouse without obtaining a divorce, IPC 323 for voluntarily causing hurt, IPC 504 for intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace, and IPC 34 for common intention, as confirmed by an official spokesperson.
