Babul Supriyo, the former Union minister and BJP MP from Asansol, who joined the Trinamool Congress after being dropped from the cabinet of Narendra Modi, has had his wings clipped in his new party as well.
Today, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unveiled changes in her line-up of Ministers and Babul Supriyo is being seen as the biggest loser in the shake-up.
Supriyo was inducted into the TMC cabinet in August 2022 and was given the Information Technology and Electronics, and Tourism portfolios. However, he has had the Tourism portfolio taken away from him in the latest reshuffle, which was announced today, hours before the Chief Minister leaves for a visit to Spain.
Supriyo retains the Information Technology and Electronics portfolio and has been given charge of the Non-Conventional Energy Department as well, but these are seen as light-weight assignments.
Supriyo’s successor in the Tourism department is State Minister Indranil Sen who is seen as being close to Mamata Banerjee. Sen has had extremely bad ties with Supriyo, with whom he had almost come to blows in the State Assembly last week.
Babul Supriyo lacks any support-base of his own and is seen as being aligned with Mamata’s nephew.
