Indian shuttler and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu advanced to the final of the Malaysia Masters competition by defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan on Saturday. Sindhu triumphed with a score of 13-21, 21-16, 21-12 in the women’s singles semifinal match. This victory marks her first final appearance since the 2023 Spain Masters.

Although Sindhu lost the first set 13-21, she made a strong comeback to dominate the next two sets, winning 21-16 and 21-12, securing her place in the final. Sindhu will compete against China’s Wang Zhiyi in the final scheduled for Sunday.

On Friday, Sindhu reached the semifinals by defeating China’s world number 6 shuttler Han Yue in the quarterfinals, winning 13-21, 21-14, 12-21 in a 55-minute match.

Earlier in the tournament, the Indian women’s doubles team of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker were defeated in the second round by Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, with scores of 21-17, 21-11. Additionally, the Indian women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were eliminated in the pre-quarterfinals, losing to the Chinese Taipei duo Yu Chien Hui and Sung Shuo Yun by 18-21, 22-20, 14-21.

The Malaysia Masters, held from May 21 to 26 in Kuala Lumpur, is a Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 level tournament. PV Sindhu has previously won the women’s singles title in this competition in 2013 and 2016, while Saina Nehwal secured the title in 2017. HS Prannoy also clinched the title last year, defeating Weng Hongyang of China 21-19, 13-21, 21-18 in the final.
