The Maharashtra prison department has enhanced the variety of items available for purchase in jail canteens, introducing a total of 173 new items. The updated canteen catalog aims to offer inmates a diverse range of essentials and recreational products. Noteworthy additions include bermuda shorts and T-shirts for undertrials, along with items like chaat masala, pickle, coconut water, chess boards, oats, coffee powder, Lonavala chikki, sugar-free sweeteners, ice cream, organic fruits, peanut butter, pani puri, art books, coloring items, and more.
Personal care products such as face wash and hair dyes have also been included. Additionally, to address the urge for tobacco, nicotine-based tablets are now permitted.
ADGP (prison) Amitabh Gupta stated, “Restrictions can lead to mood swings. Focusing on maintaining the mental health of inmates within defined discipline parameters is crucial for their rehabilitation. Expanding dietary options is likely to positively impact the overall well-being of prisoners.
