Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Maharaja’ hit screens on June 14 much to the delight of fans and opened to a good response at the Tamil Nadu box office. The actioner grossed Rs 3.5 crore on the first day and received favourable reviews from critics. It then witnessed good growth on the second day and earned Rs 6 crore at the box office. The film continued its good run at the ticket window on its first Sunday going by the initial estimates.
Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film ‘Maharaja’, which opened in theatres on Friday (June 14), has emerged as the top choice of moviegoers in Tamil Nadu. The film had an excellent first Sunday with several shows recording housefull occupancy. This suggests that it is set to have a good third day at the box office. According to Ramesh Bala, a trade tracker, ‘Maharaja’ is expected to earn nearly Rs 8 crore on Sunday (June 16).
“Maharaja faces no competition as there aren’t any new releases this week. It should do around Rs 17 crore in Tamil Nadu in the first three days. The word of mouth is extraordinary as the film has a strong non-linear screenplay,:” he told The Daily Guardian.
He added that Maharaja is also doing well in the Telugu states and Karnataka.
‘Maharaja’ is an action drama that centres on the events that transpire when a hairdresser goes to a police station and complains that “Lakshmi” is missing from his house. He struggles to elaborate on the matter further, which leaves the cops rattled. The police eventually learn about his true motives. The Makkal Selvan-led film features an ensemble cast that includes Anurag Kashyap,.Mamata Mohandas, and Natty. It is written and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan. This VJS’ 50th film, which makes it a landmark release for him.
