Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha graced the inaugural ceremony of ‘Goonj-2024’, a multi-genre mega festival hosted by the University of Jammu, underscoring its significance in celebrating the vibrant and diverse culture of Jammu and Kashmir.
Goonj-2024 has been meticulously curated to provide a platform for educational institutions to showcase their strengths, foster collaboration, and contribute to the enrichment of the educational landscape in the Union Territory.
Addressing the gathering, Lt Governor Sinha commended the University of Jammu for spearheading initiatives like ‘Design Your Degree’, ‘College on Wheels’, and the ‘Goonj’ program, which have become catalysts for lifelong learning, innovation, and creativity among students.
“In the 21st Century, ideas will be the new wealth of nations. The role of a University and College Campus will expand further,” remarked the Lt Governor, highlighting the pivotal role of educational institutions in shaping the future leaders and change-makers.
He emphasized the need for universities to evolve into hubs of collaboration and creativity, fostering relevant research and innovation aimed at transforming villages and towns for societal benefit.
Lt Governor Sinha stressed the importance of reinventing classroom learning and mentoring students to unleash their true potential, urging teachers to ignite creativity and foster independent thinking among students.
“Education should inspire students towards adventurous exploration, passion for generating new ideas, research, and innovations,” he affirmed, underlining the transformative potential of education in shaping resilient and future-ready individuals.
Emphasizing the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, Lt Governor Sinha reiterated the importance of connecting the youth with India’s rich cultural heritage and ancient knowledge systems.
During the ceremony, Lt Governor Sinha visited the photo exhibition of the ‘College on Wheels’ initiative and various stalls set up by educational institutions and departments, lauding the initiative’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning.
Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Council J&K, stressed the need for higher education institutions to ensure their activities have a positive impact on society, underscoring their role as agents of social change.
The Lt Governor released a souvenir of the festival and publications related to the ‘College on Wheels’ initiative, while also viewing a documentary showcasing the initiative’s impact.
The event also witnessed an impressive march past by a contingent of students, followed by tributes paid to General Zorawar Singh, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and valor of the region.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by eminent personalities including Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof. Bechan Lal, Vice Chancellor of Cluster University of Jammu, heads of various universities and educational institutions, faculty members, senior officials, and a large number of students.
