A towering figure in Indian tribal politics, Shibu Soren — fondly called ‘Dishom Guru’ — is being laid to rest today with full state honours at his ancestral village, Nemra, in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. The veteran Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder, who dedicated his life to the upliftment of tribal communities and the creation of Jharkhand, passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Delhi.
His impact is firmly ingrained in the social and political fabric of the area, and his passing signifies the end of an era in grassroots politics. People will be able to pay their last respects to the legendary leader on Tuesday morning when his mortal remains are positioned at the Jharkhand Assembly grounds starting at 9 a.m. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and other prominent figures have already paid heartfelt homage to Guruji, highlighting his lasting influence on Indian politics.
