A towering figure in Indian tribal politics, Shibu Soren — fondly called ‘Dishom Guru’ — is being laid to rest today with full state honours at his ancestral village, Nemra, in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. The veteran Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder, who dedicated his life to the upliftment of tribal communities and the creation of Jharkhand, passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Delhi.

His impact is firmly ingrained in the social and political fabric of the area, and his passing signifies the end of an era in grassroots politics.
