LIVE Updates | Asia Cup 2025: SKY to Lead India, Shafali Left Out of Women’s World Cup

🕒 Updated: August 19, 2025 17:00:28 IST
The Asia Cup 2025 kicks off on September 9 in the UAE, with India and Pakistan drawn in the same group — raising the possibility of up to three high-voltage clashes.

Fresh visuals from the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai showed T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav arriving early, later joined by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The all-important selection meeting is currently underway. However, heavy rains in the city have delayed the press conference, adding drama to the much-anticipated squad reveal and keeping fans on edge.

The Asia Cup 2025 kicks off on September 9 in the UAE, with India and Pakistan drawn in the same group — raising the possibility of up to three high-voltage clashes. The announcement has extra weight given the backdrop of India refusing multiple meetings with Pakistan in the WCL.

The generational transition in Indian T20 cricket makes this team revelation intriguing. India last competed in the T20 Asia Cup in 2022, led by Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In 2025, Bhuvenshwar has waned, Rohit and Kohli have departed from Internationals, and a new core is vying for position.
Shubhman Gill is firmly in the spotlight.

The spotlight is firmly on Shubman Gill. Despite being the Test captain, he hasn’t played a T20I in nearly a year. With Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all staking strong claims as openers, Gill’s place hangs in the balance.

In the bowling unit, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, and Yuzvendra Chahal are jostling for limited spin slots. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are near certainties. The wicketkeeping battle sees Jitesh Sharma challenging Samson, while Rishabh Pant remains unavailable.

The biggest boost, though, is Jasprit Bumrah’s return. Having confirmed his availability, he is expected to lead the attack alongside Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and youngster Harshit Rana.
