Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yan are set to co-star in Bleecker Street and Shivhans Pictures’ remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 romantic comedy ‘The Wedding Banquet’, directed by Andrew Ahn. Joining them in the cast are Kelly Marie Tran, Academy Award winner Yuh-jung Youn, and Joan Chen.
The reimagining of Lee’s Academy Award-nominated movie is built upon a screenplay crafted by Ahn and James Schamus. Schamus, who collaborated with Lee and Neil Peng on the original film’s screenplay, is also involved in this project, according to Variety.
Scheduled to commence filming in May in Vancouver, the film depicts the aftermath of Min’s boyfriend Chris declining his marriage proposal. Min persuades his best friend Angela to marry him instead, covering the costs of her partner Liz’s IVF treatments in exchange for his green card. However, complications arise when Min’s grandmother unexpectedly arrives from Seoul to host a traditional Korean wedding banquet for the couple.
Talking about the project, Lee in a statement said, “It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create.”
