World Physiotherapy Day 2024: How Active Physiotherapy Enhances Everyday Health

World Physiotherapy Day is celebrated annually on September 8 to raise awareness about the benefits of physiotherapy in maintaining health, mobility, and independence. Designated by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) in 1996, this year’s focus is on managing and preventing low back pain (LBP) through physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy includes various approaches, with active and passive physiotherapy being prominent. Dr. Apoorva Shrivastava, CEO and Founder of Resolve360, and an MSc in Advancing Physiotherapy, spoke to Times about how active physiotherapy extends beyond traditional injury rehabilitation to enhance everyday health. This approach, which emphasizes patient engagement and personalized exercise regimens, offers several benefits for daily well-being.

Addressing Metabolic Disorders

Active physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing metabolic disorders such as PCOD, PCOS, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and hypo/hyperthyroidism. Regular, guided physical activity helps regulate hormonal imbalances, improve insulin sensitivity, and support weight management. For instance, exercise aids in glucose metabolism and fat loss in type 2 diabetes and obesity, while it stabilizes energy levels and metabolism in hypo/hyperthyroidism, contributing to better symptom management.

Improving Bone and Joint Health

The rise in sedentary lifestyles has negatively impacted bone and joint health. Active physiotherapy addresses this by incorporating targeted therapeutic exercises into daily routines. These activities stimulate bone formation, increase bone density, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis. With professional guidance, individuals can develop safe and effective exercise programs that promote long-term bone and joint health.

Building a Collaborative Approach

A key feature of active physiotherapy is its collaborative nature. Patients actively participate in their health journey rather than passively receiving treatment.
