‘I Feel Very Awkward’: Karan Johar On Body Dysmorphia And Mental Health

Body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder where individuals obsess over perceived flaws in their appearance, often leading to severe emotional distress and functional impairment. This condition can significantly affect one’s self-esteem and quality of life. In a recent interview, renowned filmmaker Karan Johar opened up about his struggles with body dysmorphia, shedding light on this often misunderstood condition.

Karan Johar’s Struggle with Body Dysmorphia

In a candid conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza, Karan Johar discussed his ongoing battle with body dysmorphia. He revealed that despite his successes, he has always felt uncomfortable in his own skin. “I have body dysmorphia. I am very awkward getting into a pool. I don’t know how to do it without feeling pathetic. I’ve tried very hard to overcome it,” Karan shared. He elaborated on how this insecurity persists, leading him to wear oversized clothes even after losing weight, constantly feeling dissatisfied with his appearance.

Impact on Personal Life and Intimacy

Karan’s body dysmorphia has deeply affected his personal life and social interactions. He admitted to feeling awkward even around close friends, staying in his robe until the last minute before entering a pool. “Nothing has changed since I was eight. I self-body shame myself all the time,” he confessed. The impact of his condition extends to his intimate relationships as well. “Even in situations of intimacy, I need to put the lights out,” Karan revealed, highlighting the profound effect body dysmorphia has on his comfort and self-image.

Seeking Professional Help and Therapy

Recognizing the severity of his condition, Karan sought help from mental health professionals. “I’ve been to therapy for it. All these issues… create mental health problems. I even took medication after suffering from a panic attack,” he disclosed. Karan’s journey underscores the importance of seeking professional help and addressing mental health issues openly. His candid revelation serves as a reminder that body dysmorphia can affect anyone, regardless of their achievements or public image, and highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding of this condition.
