First Mpox Case in India: How It Spreads, Symptoms to Watch For, and What You Need to Know

India has reported its first suspected case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), raising concerns after the virus was declared a global emergency. Here’s everything you need to know about mpox, how it spreads, and what symptoms to watch for.

How Does Mpox Spread? Mpox is a viral infection transmitted through close personal or sexual contact, particularly among men who engage in sexual activity with other men. The virus has two strains: Clade I, more deadly with up to a 10% fatality rate, and Clade II, responsible for the global outbreak in 2022.

Symptoms to Watch Out For: Common symptoms of mpox include fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, skin lesions, and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after infection. While mpox is generally non-fatal, the new variant has been more deadly, with a 10% mortality rate.
