Winter’s dry, cold air can cause discomfort for everyone, but for contact lens wearers, it can be especially harsh. Dryness, grittiness, and irritation can be exacerbated by the lack of humidity during colder months. Dr. Rakesh Seenappa, Regional Head of Retina Services at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in Bengaluru, shares expert tips to help contact lens users protect their eyes during winter.
You should drink enough water so that your eyes are moisturized. At least six to eight glasses a day will help keep dryness at bay and ensure proper moisture levels in your eyes.
Dry and windy weather can be too harsh for the eyes to tolerate. It can dry up the eyes. Lubricating eye drops may help in this regard to keep moisture in place and avoid any irritation.
Limit your contact lens wear time in winter; this will minimize dryness and discomfort. If you can, use UV protective eyewear instead of wearing lenses all day.
Use silicone hydrogel lenses as they prevent evaporation of water, so your eyes are hydrated through the dry winter months.
Always follow the recommended care instructions for your contact lenses when handling and cleaning them. Clean and sanitize your lens case regularly to avoid infections and irritation.
Adding moisture to the air can help significantly in fighting dry eyes. Consider placing a humidifier at home or office to counteract the indoor dry air that occurs with winter.
Applying warm compresses regularly would help in the reduction of dryness and improve moisture retention of your eyes. This can be helpful to those who wear their contact lenses for long periods.
Long screen times can cause eye strain and dryness, especially to those wearing contact lenses. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to give your eyes a break.
A healthy diet has a significant impact on eye health. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish and vitamins A, C, and E in leafy greens, eggs, and nuts can maintain the best eye moisture levels and promote overall eye health.
Contact lens wearers can enjoy the winter season with their eyes comfortable, healthy, and well-protected if they simply follow these easy tips.
