Do Diabetes Cause Nerve Damage? Expert Explains

Diabetes is a condition in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot use it effectively, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. This uncontrolled sugar can cause damage to the body’s nerves, resulting in a condition known as diabetic neuropathy. The disease often remains undetected in its early stages, making it crucial for diabetics to manage their blood sugar levels proactively to prevent nerve damage.

Symptoms and Impact of Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy typically starts with symptoms in the hands and feet, where it causes numbness and weakness. High blood sugar levels damage small blood vessels, impairing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to vital organs. As a result, nerve damage can become widespread, affecting various parts of the body. Dr. Paras Agarwal from Max Healthcare Gurgaon told News18 highlights the importance of timely diabetes management to mitigate these risks.

Tips for Preventing Diabetes

  1. Stay Physically Active
Incorporate regular exercise into your routine. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, and dancing can significantly lower your risk of developing diabetes and help prevent other related health issues.
  2. Maintain a Healthy Diet
Avoid consuming high amounts of pizza, burgers, fried foods, and processed items. Instead, focus on a diet rich in seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole foods cooked with minimal oil and salt.
  3. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water daily. While there is no set amount, aiming for around two liters per day can support overall health and help prevent diabetes.
  4. Achieve and Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes. Combine exercise with a balanced diet to lose weight and consult a healthcare professional if you need additional support.
  5. Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol Consumption
Both smoking and excessive alcohol use can increase the risk of diabetes and other serious health conditions. Reducing or eliminating these habits can improve your overall health and decrease diabetes risk.
