Coffee: Friend or Foe for Migraine Relief?

Migraine headaches are a common condition, often accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. For many, these throbbing headaches can be triggered by various factors, including hormonal changes, stress, and certain foods. While medication can help manage migraine pain, some people turn to coffee for relief.

But does coffee really help, or could it make things worse?

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sheetal Goyal, a neurologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, shared insights on this topic. According to Dr. Goyal, “Drinking coffee is not a standard treatment option for migraine headaches. In some cases, consuming coffee may even trigger migraine headaches.

Does Coffee Offer Any Relief?

Dr. Goyal explained that while occasional caffeine consumption might provide short-term relief for some individuals, it is not a reliable or recommended method for managing migraines. “High levels of adenosine, a naturally occurring brain substance, can trigger migraines. Caffeine can block the action of adenosine and may provide acute anti-migraine and pain relief for some patients,” she said.

However, Dr. Goyal cautioned against regular coffee consumption for those with chronic migraines. “Caffeine products like coffee should be limited to no more than two days per week, especially for patients with chronic migraine. Too much caffeine can lead to medication-overuse headaches.”

What’s the Bottom Line?

Moderation is key when it comes to coffee and migraine management. While caffeine might offer temporary relief, excessive consumption can have the opposite effect and potentially worsen migraine symptoms.

Dr. Goyal’s advice: enjoy coffee in moderation and consult with a healthcare professional to find the best strategy for managing migraines.

For those struggling with migraines, it’s essential to consider all treatment options and consult with healthcare providers to create a personalized plan that works best for them.
