Artificial Sweeteners: Are They A Healthy Choice Or A Hidden Risk?

From refreshing lemonade in the summer to comforting tea on rainy days, and traditional delicacies like gujiya during Holi and sewai on Eid, sugar has been a staple in our lives. However, the rise of technology has led to the vilification of sugar, giving way to the popularity of artificial sweeteners among health-conscious individuals.

Artificial sweeteners, once praised as healthier alternatives, are now under scrutiny. Recent NIH research reveals their harmful effects on gut bacteria, crucial for digestion and immunity. These findings align with WHO’s 2023 guidelines, which discourage the use of non-sugar sweeteners due to their potential long-term risks, including obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, ultimately increasing mortality rates.

In light of these groundbreaking studies, it’s time to reconsider our choices. Surprisingly, natural sugar, extracted from sugarcane, can be a healthier option. Often overlooked, sugar is beneficial for low blood pressure patients as it provides instant energy and supports those engaged in prolonged physical activities. Moreover, sugar triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine, the hormones responsible for emotional comfort, explaining why many turn to sugary foods during stress or sadness.

In summary, the debate over artificial sweeteners continues. While they have certain benefits, especially in a health-conscious era, awareness and informed choices are essential. As nutrition science advances, staying updated with developments is crucial, while also preserving our cultural heritage and traditions.
