The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice Ashish J Desai, who being the
judge at the Gujarat High Court as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court.
The current chief justice of Kerala High Court is Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti.
The Supreme Court recommendations were made to fill the vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court that would arise consequent to the recent recommendation by the Collegium for elevating Justice Bhatti to the Supreme Court.
On November 21, Justice Ashish J Desai was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Gujarat and he Justice Desai has acquired experience of more than 11 years in dispensing justice. Desai being the seniormost puisne Judge in his parent High Court and is currently performing the duties of the office of Chief Justice of that High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium while recommending the name took into consideration of the fact that the High Court of Gujarat presently has no representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.
The Supreme Court Collegium took the considered view that the Justice Desai was suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala and the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name for the office.
