Supreme Court Collegium Recommended The Appointment Of Advocate As Judge Of Punjab And Haryana High Court; Tells Centre To Give Precedence To Pending Proposals

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Advocate Rohit Kapoor for the appointment as Judge of the Punjab And Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium bench in its resolution dated January 04, 2024 issued the notification with regards to the recommendation for appointment of Advocate Kapoor as Judge of the Punjab And Haryana High Court was made by the Collegium of the High Court on April 21, 2023.

Adding to it, the Supreme Court Collegium stated that further consideration of the recommendation was deferred with a view to seek a report from the Chief Justice of the Punjab And Haryana High Court in consultation with members of the High Court Collegium on the suitability of the candidate in light of the inputs placed before us.

The Supreme Court Collegium bench evaluated and has scrutinized the material placed on record on October 17, 2023.

The notification issued stated that the Supreme Court judges which being pursuant to the Memorandum of Procedure is well-versed in the affairs of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and were consulted to assess the fitness and suitability of the candidates.

The Supreme Court Collegium after careful consideration of these inputs by the recommendation added that the enquiries made by us with reliable sources to ascertain suitability of the candidate reveal that Shri Rohit Kapoor is a competent advocate suitable for elevation to the High Court wherein its is stated that the Collegium is of the considered view that Shri Rohit Kapoor is fit and suitable for appointment as Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium while stating that the Collegium resolves to recommend that Advocate Shri Rohit Kapoor be appointed as the Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium bench clarified that two advocates namely S/Shri (i) Harmeet Singh Grewal and (ii) Deepinder Singh Nalwa, whose names have been approved by this Collegium earlier in point of time i.e. on October 17, 2023, be given precedence in the matter of appointment over Shri Rohit Kapoor.
