Parliamentary Committee Adopts Reports on Bills Replacing Criminal Laws

A parliamentary committee on home affairs on Monday adopted three reports on bills aimed at replacing the current criminal laws, with some opposition members submitting dissent notes, according to sources.
The Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs, led by BJP member Brij Lal, convened on Monday, approximately 10 days after members had sought additional time to review the draft reports distributed at the end of last month.
Parliamentary sources indicated that certain opposition members had already submitted their dissent notes for the reports on the three bills, which aim to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, respectively.
According to sources, several more opposition members are expected to submit dissent notes over the next two days, in accordance with the rules.
On October 27, the standing committee on Home was unable to adopt the three draft reports due to some opposition members requesting additional time for review.
