Centre Moves Bill For Selection Of Election Commissioners By Panel Of Prime Minister, Opposition Leader And Union Minister

The Central Government in the case observed and has moved the bill to prescribe the manner of selecting the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
It has been stated that as per the bill, the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners shall be appointed by the President with regards to the recommendation of the Selection Committee consisting:

1. The Prime Minister- Chairperson;

2. The Leader of Opposition in the House of the People Member;

3. The Union Cabinet Minister who is to be nominated by the Prime Minister- Member.
The bill titled, ‘the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, the Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Office Bill, 2023 is being scheduled to be introduced by the Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Rajya Sabha.
This year, in the month of March, the constitution bench of the Supreme Court had ruled that the Election Commissioners shall be selected by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India, till it has been framed by the Parliament the laws which prescribed the selection process.
The bench comprising of Justice KM Joseph in the case observed and has passed the said direction in order to ensure the independence of the Election Commissioners from the independence.
It has also been noted by the said bench that there being no Parliamentary law at place in terms of Article 324(2) of the Constitution of India which lays down the selection procedure for Election Commissioners.
The Bill moved seeks to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners by the panel headed by the Prime Minister.
