Allahabad HC seeks state’s affidavit on acid sale and attack cases

The Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to submit an affidavit outlining the measures taken to curb the unrestricted sale of acid in the state and provide information on acid attack cases from the past five years.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice M K Gupta and Justice Kshitij Shailendra was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) advocating for a prohibition on the open sale of acid in Uttar Pradesh.
The court specified that the affidavit should include details on the compensation provided to victims and the total number of acid attack cases in the last five years. The PIL, filed by Navya Kesharwani and fellow law students, not only calls for a ban on the open sale of acid but also seeks compensation and complimentary medical treatment for acid attack victims.
The court scheduled the next hearing for January 23, 2024.
