Himat Rai, 62, who had been supporting his family as a foreman in Kuwait for three decades, tragically lost his life in a devastating fire in Mangaf, Kuwait. Rai, survived by his wife Sarabjit Kaur, two daughters, and a son, was the main financial support for his family in Kakkon, a suburb where they settled after moving from Salempur village. His sudden demise in the fire, which claimed the lives of 49 individuals, mostly Indian nationals, has left his family in deep shock.
Rai’s son, Arshdeep Singh, a Class 10 student, received the heart-wrenching news from a colleague of his father. Despite initial disbelief, the family later confirmed Rai’s death through a relative in Kuwait. Rai, who had visited his family just last year, was known for providing for his family’s needs without discussing his earnings.
The tragic incident in the Al-Mangaf building has raised questions about living conditions and safety measures for migrant workers in Kuwait. Rai’s daughter, Sumandeep, shared concerns over cramped living conditions in the building, which had reportedly worsened recently due to room partitions.
Amidst their grief, Rai’s family is hopeful for support from both the Indian government and Rai’s employer, NBTC in Kuwait, to assist with their living expenses. Officials from Hoshiarpur administration have assured full assistance to the family, with preparations underway to receive Rai’s body in Delhi.
The mortal remains of the victims, including Rai, are being repatriated to India, with an Indian Air Force flight already landing in Kochi carrying the remains. The tragic incident has underscored the challenges faced by migrant workers abroad and the critical need for ensuring their safety and welfare.
The cremation of Himat Rai is scheduled to take place in Hoshiarpur on Saturday, marking a somber closure to a life dedicated to supporting his loved ones and his community.
