Despite the district administration’s lakhs of efforts, suicide cases among coaching students in Kota are on the rise. Another student, who had been living in Kota for the past 8 years and studying online for a BTech degree, committed suicide by hanging himself. However, the police claimed that he was not a coaching student but was studying online for a BTech degree.
On the other hand, his relatives say that he was still pursuing his BTech degree, and for three years until 2019, he also took engineering coaching from a private coaching centre here. As no suicide note was found with him, the reasons for the suicide remain unknown.
His body was placed in the mortuary. After the arrival of relatives in the evening, the final rites were performed, and the body was handed over to the family. The deceased student is identified as Noor Mohammad, a native of Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. This is the third suicide this year.
Vigyan Nagar Thana in charge of Kaushalya stated that Noor Mohammad, a resident of Veerpur in Gonda district, was staying in the PG in the Vigyan Nagar Thana area of Kota. He used to bring food from a mess. On January 31, he placed his tiffin outside the room and left.
When he returned on the evening of February 1, he found the previous day’s tiffin kept outside. Upon opening it, he discovered it filled. He knocked on the door of the room, but when the student did not open it, he informed the PG administrator. When they looked through the window, they found the student hanging from the fan.
Upon receiving information, the Vigyan Nagar Thana team reached the location, broke down the door of the room, took everyone out, and took him to the mortuary in the hospital. There is suspicion that the student committed suicide on January 31, but it was only discovered on February 1.
Upon receiving information, the deceased’s father Moinuddin and brother Yaar Mohammad reached Kota. In their presence, the police conducted a postmortem on the body and handed it over to them. The deceased’s father said that Noor Mohammad was studying online coaching for BTech in Kota, and there was no mental pressure on him.
He had come to the village two years ago and had been staying in Kota since then. There was a conversation with his family on January 28, but no further communication took place. He mentioned that the deceased had an earphone in his ear, which could help determine who he was talking to during the suicide. He provided this information to the police, who are now working on this angle.
The Thana in-charge stated that the student Noor Mohammad was not a coaching student in Kota; he had been selected for BTech. He had received admission to a college in Chennai. He was staying in Kota and taking online classes. He had also informed his friends about this. Noor Mohammad studied JEE coaching in Kota from 2016 to 2019.
According to information, this is the third suicide case of a student in Kota in 2024. Before this, a student committed suicide by hanging on January 29, a 12th-grade student named Niharika, who was preparing for coaching in Kota. Another student preparing for NEET committed suicide on January 23. Mohammad Zaid, the student’s name, was a resident of Muradabad, Uttar Pradesh, and stayed in a hostel in the New Rajeev Nagar area of Jawahar Nagar Thana in Kota.
The previous year also witnessed a significant number of suicides among coaching students in Kota. According to information, last year, 26 students committed suicide. To prevent student suicides, the Rajasthan government formed a committee on October 20, 2023. The committee identified several major reasons for student suicides, after which Collector V. Coffee himself started the “Motivate the Student” campaign at the district level. However, despite these efforts, student suicides continue.
Hostel seized upon investigation
In the case of a coaching student’s suicide, the administration has seized a hostel in the Talwandi area. District Collector Dr Ravindra Goswami stated that this action was taken due to non-compliance with the prescribed guidelines in the respective hostel. He mentioned that during the recent investigation into a student’s suicide case, no hanging device was found in the room.
Additional action has been initiated in the court of the additional district magistrate based on the investigation report. Acting under Section 133 of the CrPC, the additional district magistrate has seized the Kanchan Residency in Talwandi.
