In response to the recent rape and murder case involving a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, on Thursday, led protests demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Addressing the protesters outside the hospital, Paul emphasized that the demonstration was aimed at ensuring the safety of all citizens in the state.
“We are protesting to ensure the safety of every citizen in West Bengal. We have lost faith in Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and demand her resignation,” Paul stated. She criticized the Chief Minister for failing to protect the people and maintain law and order in the state.
Joining the chorus for Banerjee’s resignation, BJP MP Saumitra Khan also expressed outrage over the incident and demanded swift justice. He called for the arrest of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the officers involved in initially labeling the case as a suicide. “The Kolkata Police Commissioner should be arrested and taken into CBI custody. The team that misinformed the victim’s parents about the cause of death should also face action,” Khan said.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, has triggered widespread protests and prompted calls for accountability. Several BJP leaders, including CR Kesavan and National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to shield the accused. Kesavan declared that Banerjee had “lost the confidence of the people of West Bengal and the country,” urging her immediate resignation.
The case has drawn national attention, with the Supreme Court taking suo motu cognizance and forming a National Task Force to recommend measures for the safety of medical professionals. A CBI investigation is currently underway, and a team from the agency has already conducted searches at the RG Kar Medical College, including a thorough examination of the former principal’s office.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the victim’s family and, after gathering details from them, announced that he would send a confidential letter to the Chief Minister regarding the matter.
The tragic incident has not only sparked protests but also reignited debates about women’s safety and governance in West Bengal. The demand for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation continues to gain momentum as political tensions rise in the state.
