Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was moved from Muktsar to Nabha Jail today due to security issues. Nabha Jail, known for housing numerous gangsters, had been previously reported to be a hub for a gang-managed extortion network.
Khaira, initially detained in Muktsar Jail for only 1.5 hours, was arrested in Chandigarh and subsequently taken to Jalalabad. Following a court appearance, he was remanded in police custody for two days, then placed on a 14-day judicial remand.
The arrest relates to a 2015 NDPS case in which Khaira was implicated. Police, during the investigation, uncovered two kilograms of heroin, various gold items, a homemade pistol, and two Pakistani SIM cards. Nine individuals were convicted in 2017, with Khaira later being identified as an additional suspect.
Previously, in 2021, Khaira faced arrest for money laundering associated with this case but secured bail in 2022. The Supreme Court in February 2023 overturned a lower court’s decision to summon Khaira over allegations in the same drug case.
