Former England cricket captain Kevin Pietersen, currently in Jammu for the Legends League T20 cricket season 2, expressed disappointment with the refurbished Maulana Azad Stadium’s wicket, deeming it unsuitable for T20 cricket. During a practice session on Tuesday, Pietersen conveyed his concerns to reporters, emphasizing that the playing surface is not conducive to the demands of T20 cricket.
Pietersen didn’t mince words as he criticized his home country’s national team, describing their performance in the recently concluded World Cup as “terrible.” Despite openly supporting India in the final against Australia, Pietersen’s wager didn’t materialize, with Australia securing the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup for the sixth time on November 19.
The Legends League, currently in its second season, has drawn praise from Pietersen for providing retired players with a platform to return to the field. Hosted by the resurrected Maulana Azad Stadium after a hiatus of over three decades, the tournament features six teams, boasting more than 100 former international players.
Reflecting on his stay in Jammu, Pietersen commended the warmth and hospitality extended to the participating players. He took a moment away from his busy schedule to enjoy a round of golf at the Jammu Tawi golf course.
Addressing the low-scoring game on Monday, Pietersen expressed disappointment, emphasizing the audience’s desire for competitive cricket featuring actively engaged former professionals. He reiterated his critique of the stadium’s wicket, expressing hope for improvement in the upcoming matches.
Turning his attention to the World Cup final, Pietersen acknowledged the pressure on the Indian team facing a formidable Australian opponent. He praised Australia’s competitiveness and overall performance on the field.
In terms of the Legends League, Pietersen highlighted its serious momentum, suggesting that it provides an attractive option for players contemplating early retirement. He underscored the league’s competitiveness, efficient organization, and logistical excellence, predicting its potential for significant success in the future.
