A four-year-old girl in Kerala underwent surgery at the Government Medical College Hospital on Thursday, intended to remove an extra finger. However, the operation was mistakenly performed on her tongue.

The family discovered the error when they noticed cotton in the child’s mouth post-surgery, leading them to investigate further. Upon realization of the mistake, they raised the issue, prompting a significant outcry.

Health Minister Veena George announced the suspension of Associate Professor Dr. Bejohn Johnson following a report from the Director of Medical Education. The minister has called for a detailed inquiry and emphasized the need for strict adherence to medical protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

The police have registered a case against Dr Johnson under IPC Sections 336 (endangering life or personal safety) and 337. The family, who reported no prior issues with the child’s tongue, demanded accountability from the hospital authorities, expressing concerns about potential adverse effects from the erroneous procedure. The hospital explained the mistake was due to scheduling surgeries for two children on the same day. Health Minister George has directed hospitals to ensure proper protocols are followed to avoid similar errors.
