Praveen Sood, the director general of police (DGP) of Karnataka, was appointed as the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday for a two-year term. He will take over after Subodh Kumar Jaiswal’s term ends on 25 May.

“Approval of the competent authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) subsequent to completion of his tenure,” the Department of Personnel and Training said in the order.

The announcement came a day after a high-powered panel comprised of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury met to decide on the next CBI chief’s name.

Aside from the new CBI director, the high-powered panel discussed the appointments of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) and Lokpal on Saturday.

Beginning his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mysore in 1989, he went on to serve as Superintendent of Police in Bellary and Raichur before being assigned to Bangalore City as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.
