United States Vice President Kamala Harris officially launched her presidential campaign on Saturday, July 27, by signing the necessary forms to declare her candidacy for the November 5, 2024 election. In a statement on X, Harris expressed her determination, saying, “Today, I signed the forms officially declaring my candidacy for President of the United States. I will work hard to earn every vote, and in November, our people-powered campaign will win.”
Harris, 59, quickly garnered Democratic support following her endorsement by President Joe Biden, who has endorsed her to succeed him. She has received backing from prominent Democratic figures including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and the Clinton family.
The endorsement from the Obamas came a day before her announcement. Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama voiced their support, with Barack Obama stating, “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office.” Harris, who has maintained a close relationship with the Obamas since before his presidency, expressed her gratitude and anticipation for the campaign trail.
According to a recent Associated Press survey, Kamala Harris has secured substantial support from Democratic delegates ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which is set to begin on August 19 in Chicago. The convention is expected to hold a virtual nominating vote by August 7 to finalize Harris and her yet-to-be-named running mate as the official Democratic ticket.
However, a Wall Street Journal poll released on Friday shows a tight race. Former President Donald Trump, now the leading Republican candidate, holds a slim two-percentage-point lead over Harris, with Trump at 49% and Harris at 47%. The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
