Justice Shekhar B. Saraf sworn in as the judge of the Allahabad High Court, while following the transfer of him from the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf was born on October 21, 1971, the son of Late Justice Sohan Lal Saraf and Late Sulochana Saraf, Justice Shekhar Saraf took education at St. Xaviers Collegiate School, Calcutta and La Martiniere School for Boys, Calcutta.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf in 1996 graduated with the B.A. LLB (Hons.) course from National Law School of India University, NLSIU. He also had the opportunity of being the first NLSIU student to have undertaken a placement program with Mr. Dipankar Gupta, The Solicitor General of India, New Delhi.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf worked with Arthur Andersen and Co., a worldwide consulting firm, dealing in corporate law and indirect taxation matters from July 1996 to December 1997.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf joined the chambers in January 1998 of Mr. R. N. Bajoria, Senior Advocate at the Calcutta High Court dealing in Taxation matters.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf on 12.03.1999 was admitted and was enrolled as an Advocate (Seniority as an Advocate from January 19, 1998) in the Bar Council of West Bengal.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf independently handled all kinds of matters including company matters, arbitration, central excise, customs and income tax in the Original and Appellate Side of the High Court, tax tribunals and civil courts at Calcutta.
However, Justice Shekhar B. Saraf regularly advised private and nationalized banks on issues relating to mortgage, recovery and appeared on their behalf before the High Court, Debt Recovery Tribunals and Consumer Courts.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf in the year 2000 obtained the Chevening Scholarship for The Young Indian Lawyers Program 2000 sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom ad under the program, studied for six weeks at the College of Law, York on various subjects which includes the International Arbitration, Competition law, European Community law and Mergers and Acquisitions.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf in January 2001 qualified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf also appeared as the counsel for the Union of India at the Calcutta High Court concerning customs, excise and company matters, from 2004 onwards. Justice Shekhar B. Saraf appeared as the Senior Counsel for the Government of India concerning income tax matters and from December 2011 appeared as a Senior Standing Counsel concerning central excise, customs, and service tax matters.
Justice Shekhar B. Saraf was being elevated as the Additional Judge of the High Court at Calcutta on 21.09.2017. Justice Shekhar B. Saraf was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on September 16, 2019.
