Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in the “crucial election” as the first phase of polling commenced in the region. In a post on X, Kharge highlighted the eagerness of the people to protect their rights and usher in a new era of genuine development and full statehood.
“As voting begins in 24 Assembly constituencies, I encourage everyone to exercise their democratic right and vote in large numbers. Every vote has the power to shape the future and foster peace, stability, justice, progress, and economic empowerment. We especially appeal to first-time voters to take part in this important election and become catalysts for change,” Kharge stated.
He also reminded voters of the historical context, noting, “For the first time ever, a state was downgraded to a Union Territory. When you cast your vote, remember who is responsible for this situation. Let us unite to create a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir, where every citizen’s voice is heard.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called on voters in the region to participate in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of strengthening democracy. “As the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections begins, I urge all voters, particularly young and first-time voters, to exercise their franchise,” he wrote on X.
Polling for the first phase started at 7 AM amid strict security measures, concluding at 6 PM. Voters formed long queues at polling stations from the morning. This phase includes 24 assembly constituencies—16 in the Kashmir region and 8 in Jammu. The second and third phases of voting are scheduled for September 25 and October 1, with vote counting set for October 8.
