Police in Jammu and Kashmir have dismissed charges levelled by political parties regarding the harassment of their workers as “without basis.”
In a statement issued here, the police addressed statements and speculations made by political parties, stating that allegations of harassment against their party workers were unfounded. The Jammu and Kashmir Police affirmed their commitment to enforcing the law and Model Code of Conduct (MCC) guidelines to ensure security and uphold the integrity of free and fair elections.
The National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) sought the intervention of the Election Commission on Sunday to halt alleged harassment and illegal arrests of their workers. PDP’s Lok Sabha poll candidate from Srinagar, Waheed Para, accused a senior IPS officer of attempting to manipulate voter turnout in areas where the party holds strong support.
The police statement clarified that any actions taken were irrespective of party affiliation and were in response to violations of election rules. It mentioned actions such as the seizure of cash, narcotics, liquor, and preventive measures against miscreants and potential offenders with links to terrorism and separatism.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police emphasized their commitment to securing candidates and political workers, ensuring their safety during political rallies and roadshows, regardless of party affiliation. They underscored the sanctity of elections and the shared responsibility of all participants, noting the common adversary faced by all.
While acknowledging criticism as a professional hazard, the police cautioned against speculative statements targeting individual officers, citing security risks. Nevertheless, they reiterated their dedication to impartial law enforcement.
The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to go to polls on Monday.
