Ranchi: The newly formed government in Jharkhand, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is set to expand its cabinet after proving its majority in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly’s special session on Monday. Hemant Soren, who was sworn in for the 3rd time on July 4, will lead this expansion.

Hemant Soren took the oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand at Raj Bhavan, Ranchi. He was released on bail by the Jharkhand High Court on June 28, after spending 5 months in jail.

His return to the Chief Minister’s office follows the resignation of Champai Soren, who had taken the oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2 but resigned five months later.

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January on charges related to an alleged land scam and money laundering. He had resigned as Chief Minister before his arrest on January 31. This was not his first tenure; he previously served as the 11th Chief minister after taking the oath on December 29, 2019.

The return of Hemant Soren is expected to strengthen the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which secured three seats in the tribal-dominated state during the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 assembly elections, JMM, in alliance with Congress and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), won a comfortable majority with forty-seven seats in the 81-member house.
