Despite all the efforts being made by the district administration, the trend of coaching students committing suicide in Kota is not stopping. On Monday, Niharika Singh, an 18-year-old student preparing for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE MAIN 2024), hanged herself.
Before committing suicide, in the suicide note, she sought forgiveness from her parents, calling herself a loser and mentioning suicide as the last option. The police conducted a post-mortem of the body and handed it over to the family. An investigation into the case is underway.
According to the police, Niharika Singh, a resident of Jhalawar, lived with her family in the Manpura area of Borkheda Thana. She was preparing for the JEE MAIN exam online. She had been under stress for several days regarding the exam.
Jitendra Singh Shekhawat, in charge of Borkheda Thana, stated that on Monday morning around 9:30 am, the incident occurred. The student hanged herself at her home. Family members immediately took her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. This is the second suicide of a coaching student in Kota this year.
The deceased student’s cousin brother Vikram Singh said that Niharika was studying online coaching. Last year, she appeared for the 12th-grade exams, in which she passed with a low percentage. Therefore, she was preparing for the 12th grade again along with preparing for the Joint Entrance Exam. Her JEE Main exam was scheduled for January 30 or 31, and she had been continuously stressed about it.
Vikram mentioned that Niharika used to study for about 6 to 7 hours. She was staying in Kota for her studies, and her father, Vijay Singh, was a security guard in a bank.
In the suicide note, Niharika wrote, “Mummy papa, I can’t do JEE. So I suicide. I am a loser, the worst daughter. Sorry, mummy papa.” Borkheda Thana police are investigating this suicide note.
The district administration is concerned about the suicides happening in the coaching city of Kota. District Collector Ravindra Goswami has started efforts to motivate coaching students under the Coffee with Collector initiative. The district collector stated that children should also have a Plan B in life. Expressing concern about coaching suicides in the city, he emphasized following the guidelines directed by the central and state governments. He said, “Children should not stress about exams, and success or failure in one exam does not determine life’s success. Life is significant, and success and failure continue in life. Instead of taking steps like suicide, face boldly whatever problem comes your way.”
