A trial date of March 4 has been set for former President Donald Trump in the federal case in Washington where he is charged with attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. US District Judge Tanya Chutkan denied a defense request to postpone the trial until April 2026, as well as the special counsel’s proposal for a January trial. Chutkan expressed dissatisfaction with both options during a status conference on Monday.
In this case, Trump, a Republican, faces a four-count indictment alleging he schemed to reverse his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election. This federal election subversion charge is one of four legal cases against Trump. A separate federal case led by special counsel Jack Smith accuses Trump of unlawfully retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida and refusing to return them. This trial is scheduled for May 20.
Additionally, Trump is involved in state cases in New York and Georgia. In New York, Manhattan prosecutors accuse him of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to a pornographic actor who claims an affair with him. In Georgia’s Fulton County, Trump and 18 others face charges in a racketeering conspiracy aimed at overturning the state’s 2020 election. Trump, considered an early favorite for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, turned himself in for the Fulton County case and was photographed for the first mug shot in US history of a former president. He contends that these investigations are politically motivated and intended to harm his chances of regaining the presidency. Judge Chutkan’s decision to set the trial for March 4 aligns with neither the defense’s preference for 2026 nor the prosecution’s suggestion of January.
Trump’s indictment stems from allegations of seeking to undo his election loss, which has led to a string of legal battles in federal and state courts. While facing these charges, Trump continues to assert that the allegations against him are driven by political motives, aiming to undermine his potential return to the White House.
