Stop Wiping Toilet Seats With Paper! Here’s Why A Japanese Maker Says It’s A No-No

A Japanese toilet maker, Toto, has warned against using toilet paper to wipe seats. The company explains that it can cause scratches, leading to discolouration, due to the seat’s delicate plastic resin.

Stop Wiping Toilet Seats With Paper! Here’s Why A Japanese Maker Says It’s A No-No

In a surprising public service announcement, Japanese toilet maker Toto appealed to users not to clean their toilet seats with toilet paper. The cautionary message was the result of a social media post that went viral as a user reported scratches on its newly installed Toto “Washlet” seat after the user cleaned it with toilet paper. According to Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun, the user also berated the material used for the product, saying it is less than what it should be.

The Science Behind the Advisory

Toto clarified that its high-tech “Washlet” bidet seats are made from plastic resin chosen for its durability, resistance to detergents, and ability to mold into intricate shapes. However, using dry toilet paper or cloth can create micro-scratches on the surface, making it prone to dirt accumulation and discolouration over time. The company emphasiSed that it currently has no plans to change the material, as its selection balances quality, safety, and cost.

Proper Cleaning Recommendations

Lifestyle experts recommend using a soft cloth soaked in water or detergent for cleaning toilet seats instead of dry or abrasive materials like nylon scrubbers or metal cleaners. These measures help preserve the seat’s integrity and appearance.

Health Warning: Don’t Sit Too Long

The PSA also sheds light on another bathroom habit: prolonged sitting on the toilet. Experts warn that extended periods, often due to smartphone use, can lead to health issues. Sitting on a toilet keeps the rectum at a lower position, increasing strain on the pelvic floor and making it harder for blood to circulate back to the heart due to gravity.

Toto’s flagship “Washlet” bidet seats are among the most sought-after worldwide, featuring advanced functions like an automatic lid, air dryer, and adjustable water pressure. The announcement serves as a reminder to use these innovative products correctly for optimal performance and health.
