Pakistan PM: president is not empowered to decide on polls

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan, said on Monday that the president does not have the authority to set the election date, according to Pakistani news outlet Geo News. He added that the decision about the elections would be made by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The idea of Alvi’s possibility of selecting data is “wrong” as the discussions regarding the elections are taking place, according to sources within Pakistan’s Presidential Palace, according to Geo News.

In an interview with a private television network, Kakar said that a statute that gave the ECP the authority to announce the date of new elections had been adopted by the parliament.

Arif Alvi, the president of Pakistan, has been urged by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to declare the election date, according to Geo News. The proposal was made by PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub Khan in a letter to Arif Alvi.
