Security Forces Begin Search Operation After Sopore Terrorist Encounter in Baramulla

Security forces launched a search operation on Saturday after a brief exchange of fire with terrorists in the Sopore area of Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. According to the police, the area has been cordoned off, and the search operation is ongoing.

The Jammu and Kashmir police, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the incident, stating, “Exchange of fire at Watergam area of Sopore. Alert security forces retaliated. Area cordoned off. Searches underway. Further details shall follow.” Additional information is awaited as the situation develops.

Recent months have seen a surge in terror attacks across the Jammu region, with notable incidents occurring in Doda and Udhampur. The escalation comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for its first assembly elections in a decade. The last assembly polls in the Union Territory took place in 2014.

The upcoming elections will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 4. Out of 90 assembly constituencies, 74 are general, while nine are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and seven for Scheduled Castes.
