DHSK Urges Public Awareness On SOPs Amid Gastroenteritis Outbreak In Kashmir

In response to the ongoing gastroenteritis outbreak in Kashmir, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) has mandated a robust public awareness initiative to inform the populace about the necessary Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to curb the disease’s spread.

According to an official circular from DHSK, of which The Daily Guardian has obtained a copy, officials have been instructed to leverage all available platforms, including social media, for disseminating information.

“There has been an outbreak of gastroenteritis in certain areas of the Kashmir division. To prevent further spread of the disease, it is crucial to educate the public on the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to be followed. In this regard, all Chief Medical Officers, Medical Superintendents, and Block Medical Officers are urged to conduct extensive awareness campaigns in their respective areas,” states the circular.

The prescribed SOPs include:

– Drinking and cooking only with boiled water

– Maintaining proper hand hygiene using soap and disinfectants

– Avoiding close contact with affected individuals

– Reporting to the nearest health facility promptly if symptoms arise

– Focusing particularly on children, ensuring they frequently wash their hands

– Keeping children, elderly individuals, and those with comorbidities away from affected individuals

– Closely monitoring children’s health for early symptom detection

– Avoiding raw vegetables and salads

– Washing fruits thoroughly before consumption

– Steering clear of street food and junk food

– Staying hydrated and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours

DHSK has instructed officials to employ various methods for spreading awareness, including miking, door-to-door campaigns, posters, pamphlets, and social media.

“Regular updates on the outbreak and SOPs must be shared with the public to prevent misinformation. Prompt action is expected, and a report on the awareness campaigns conducted must be submitted to this office by the end of the week,” the circular concludes.

This directive underscores the importance of proactive measures and community involvement in managing the outbreak effectively.
