External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has firmly defended India’s purchase of Russian oil amid criticism from Western nations. Speaking to Corriere della Sera in Italy, he questioned Europe’s selective disengagement with Russia, stating that “life is about respecting other people’s interests.”

   Jaishankar noted that Europe has not completely cut off business ties with Russia despite its “principled stance.” He emphasized that different regions have their own priorities and interests.

   “If everything is a matter of principle, why hasn’t Europe stopped all trade with Russia?” he asked.

2. Impact on Global Energy Markets:
   Europe’s shift to alternative energy sources has strained global markets. Jaishankar highlighted the unfair expectation for India to bear higher costs to appease European priorities.

   “Why should India pay higher prices just to make you happy?” he remarked.

India’s Stance on the Russia-Ukraine War

Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to diplomacy and dialogue as the path to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He stressed the need for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, urging global efforts to bring both sides to the table.

“A solution doesn’t lie on the battlefield,” he said, emphasizing the wider global impact of prolonged conflicts.

On International Criminal Court (ICC)

When asked about ICC arrest warrants for leaders like Vladimir Putin, Jaishankar reminded that India is not a signatory to the ICC.

“When you’re not members of a body, that already tells you what your views are about that body,” he quipped.
