In Rajasthan, the women’s vote played a significant role in the past five Legislative Assembly elections. The party that received the most votes from women in the capital won the state government. Looking specifically at Jaipur, this has not happened during the reserved seats’ delimitation in 2008. Otherwise, every year, the party that received the most votes from women has won with a majority. The term of any party’s power lasts for five years, and in the past five elections, women’s votes have had a significant impact.
In the year 1998, most women voted in favour of the Congress.
In this legislative assembly election, Congress received the highest number of votes in both the capital and the state. The highest number of women voters’ votes were cast in the constituencies of Johari Bazar and Bani Park. In Johari Bazar, women cast a total of 60,906 votes, and Congress candidate Taqiuddin Ahmad won with 70,208 votes. The difference between the total women’s votes and the candidate’s votes is about ten thousand. It is estimated that the women’s majority can be seen. In addition, this year in Jaipur, the highest number of women’s votes were cast in Bani Park. Here, 74,320 women voted, and Congress’s Uday Singh Rathore won with 77,770 votes. The victory of Congress candidates in the female vote and the actual vote is quite close. In Bani Park, Congress legislators won with a 9.62% margin, and in Johari Bazar, they won with a 2.17% margin.
While the number of women voters increased, there was a change in the party’s favour.
If we look at the seats in Jaipur, the Congress and the BJP received the most votes from women in the 1998 and 2003 Rajasthan elections. In both elections, the party that received the most votes from women in the capital’s seats won. However, during the delimitation of reserved seats in 2008, the BJP received the most votes in the seats of Phulera and Jhotwara. But even then, the BJP suffered defeat by the Congress in this election.
The strong faces in the seats with the most female voters in Jaipur. Due to the strong faces in the seats with the most female voters in Jaipur, Congress could not perform well in Phulera and Jhotwara seats. In 2008, the most female voters and female voting were in Jhotwara. The victory candidate of the BJP, Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, was from this seat. Shekhawat is a strong face in the capital. After 2008, he contested and won the Jhotwara Legislative Assembly seat. Following this, in the 2013 elections, Congress candidate Lal Chand Kataria was the one who gave tough competition to Shekhawat in Jhotwara. As seen from 2008 to 2017, Shekhawat had a significant presence in Vasundhara’s rule. In the elections, BJP candidates Shekhawat, Lal Chand Kataria, and Rekha Kataria cut tickets from Congress.
The trend of 5-year-power-change cycle in Rajasthan Looking at the past Rajasthan Legislative Assembly elections, a trend of Congress, then BJP, then Congress, and again BJP has been observed. In this case, if the trend of alternating power continues, there is a possibility of the BJP coming to power in Rajasthan in the upcoming elections. Looking at the previous elections, in 2018, there were a total of 122,199 female voters in Jhotwara, and Congress’s Lal Chand Kataria saved his seat by cutting tickets. Kataria received a total of 127,185 votes and secured his position with a margin of 4.14%. After Jhotwara, in the Vidhyadhar Nagar seat, BJP candidate Narpat Singh Rajvi secured his seat.
Narpat Singh received a total of 95,599 votes, and female voters in this seat were 105,444, so the role of women voters in helping BJP candidates secure victory can be noted. This year, it can be seen that the most votes were cast in Jhotwara and Vidhyadhar Nagar seats in Jaipur. The results had one Congress candidate and one BJP candidate, and the competition between the two national parties was very close. The results can be seen again this year.
