Bollywood veteran Jackie Shroff has taken legal action to protect his personality and publicity rights. Shroff filed a suit before the Delhi High Court against several entities for allegedly using his name, photographs, voice, and the term “Bhidu” without his permission.
The lawsuit is a significant development in the ongoing debate over celebrity rights in the digital era. Shroff’s decision to pursue legal action follows similar moves by actors like Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan to safeguard their personality rights.
Last September, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order protecting Anil Kapoor’s personality rights and restraining various entities from misusing his image, name, voice, or other elements of his persona for commercial purposes without his consent.
Amitabh Bachchan also sought an injunction from the court to prevent a jeweler from using his celebrity status to promote its products without his permission.
Shroff’s plea will be heard by the court on Wednesday.
