Italian football legend Leonardo Bonucci has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37, as reported on Sunday. Bonucci, who recently played for Fenerbahce, decided to hang up his boots following a storied career that spanned several top clubs.

Bonucci’s stint with Fenerbahce comes to an end after a brief tenure, marked by hopes of success that unfortunately did not materialize as expected. His final match for the club will be against Istanbulspor, where he aims to conclude his career on a high note by potentially securing a trophy.

Expressing his gratitude, Leonardo Bonucci stated, “It was a pleasure for me to be a part of this wonderful family. I tried to show my best on and off the field, but most importantly, we will fight our last battle.” He emphasized his desire to finish his career with a cup, highlighting the opportunity for Fenerbahce to clinch the title.

Fenerbahce captain Hakan Yandas praised Bonucci’s leadership qualities, acknowledging his significant contributions both on and off the field. Bonucci’s journey in Turkey follows his departure from Juventus, where he terminated his contract last summer before joining Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on a short-term deal, which lasted only six months.

Despite his illustrious career, Leonardo Bonucci was notably excluded from Italy’s preliminary squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany by head coach Luciano Spalletti. However, his legacy remains intact, particularly for his pivotal role in Italy’s Euro 2020 championship victory. With 121 caps and eight goals for the Azzurri, Bonucci’s impact on the national team is undeniable.

Throughout his career, Bonucci epitomized excellence, notably during his time at Juventus, where he made 350 appearances and contributed to the club’s extensive trophy collection, solidifying their status as Serie A giants.
