The Israeli military confirmed on Thursday that it conducted a strike on a UN school in Gaza, claiming it targeted a Hamas compound. The strike resulted in casualties, with Hamas reporting at least 27 deaths.

According to the Israeli military, the strike targeted “terrorists” within a Hamas compound located inside a UNRWA school in Nuseirat, central Gaza. UNRWA is the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees.

Hamas’s media office condemned the strike as a “horrific massacre” that brings shame to humanity, reporting significant casualties and injuries.

The recent escalation in violence follows Hamas’s attack on southern Israel, leading to casualties on both sides. Israel’s military operations in response have resulted in a significant number of casualties in Gaza, primarily civilians, according to health authorities in the region.

The ongoing conflict has sparked diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and address humanitarian concerns. US President Joe Biden has outlined a proposed plan for a temporary ceasefire, hostage exchanges, and increased aid, although Hamas insists on a permanent truce and full Israeli withdrawal, which Israel rejects.

Negotiations mediated by US, Qatari, and Egyptian officials aim to reach a truce and address hostage situations in Gaza. However, significant hurdles remain as Hamas demands a permanent ceasefire and Israel emphasizes security concerns.

Meanwhile, tensions persist in Jerusalem, where Israeli police have deployed a large number of officers ahead of an annual march commemorating historical events related to the city’s capture. The march has been a focal point for Israeli-Palestinian tensions in recent years.

Additionally, tensions have escalated between Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, resulting in cross-border fire, casualties, and evacuations.

As the situation unfolds, international attention remains focused on efforts to de-escalate the conflict, address humanitarian needs, and restore stability in the region.
