As tensions rise in West Asia, Alex Gandler, the Deputy Spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on Wednesday that India represents a “voice of reason” and can play a significant role in the region. He emphasized India’s importance as a partner, especially during such critical times, and called for a “message of calm” to be communicated to Iran, urging it to dissolve its proxies and cease attacks on Israel.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Gandler highlighted the strong relationship between Israel and the Indian government, noting both governmental and people-to-people appreciation. He remarked, “We see India as a voice of reason that could act in this region.” He also pointed out the presence of mediators aligned with Iran and advocated for a mediating message to Tehran to halt its anti-Israel rhetoric.

The recent escalation began with a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, prompting Israel to respond with airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure and leadership while trying to minimize civilian casualties. According to the Gaza health ministry, the conflict has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths. The situation has worsened, with Houthi rebels in Yemen also targeting Israel and other nations in the Red Sea.

Gandler noted, “We are surrounded by rockets, not just from Lebanon and Gaza. A couple of weeks ago, Iran fired rockets at us, and Yemen has also targeted us.” He described the conflict as a “seven-front assault on Israel,” asserting that the Israeli army currently holds the upper hand and is equipped to deter any threats.

Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, marked the one-year anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas with a solemn ceremony in New Delhi, emphasizing the need to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. He stated, “Israel will prevail. We will defeat our enemies. We will bring back hostages.” Azar expressed gratitude for India’s support, stating, “We are grateful for the support of the Government and People of India, who partner with us to build a better future.”

He also vividly described the horrific scenes of murder, kidnapping, and the subsequent celebrations in Gaza as hostages were taken. “These terrorists were killing and boasting about it. They are worse than animals,” Azar asserted.
