An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip hit a car, killing five people on Saturday, including employees of World Central Kitchen (WCK). The Israeli military claimed it targeted a WCK worker allegedly linked to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.
WCK’s Reaction and Operational Pause
WCK expressed sorrow over the attack and clarified it had no information connecting the victims to the Hamas attack. The charity paused its operations in Gaza, following a previous suspension after an Israeli airstrike killed seven WCK workers.
Israeli Military’s Claim and Call for Clarification
The Israeli military maintained that one of the victims had worked for WCK and was involved in the Hamas attack. They called for clarification from WCK and the international community.
Aid Agencies in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis
This airstrike adds to the dangers faced by aid agencies in Gaza, where the ongoing war has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing most of the 2.3 million residents and causing widespread hunger.
Confirmation of WCK Workers’ Deaths
Palestinian health official Muneer Alboursh confirmed the deaths. An anonymous aid worker confirmed that three victims were WCK employees. At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, WCK employee badges and other belongings were found.
