Following a recent mob attack on their living quarters, students from Pakistan and other Asian countries are departing Kyrgyzstan in large numbers, although some express hope to return once the situation stabilizes.

Hundreds of Kyrgyz young men raided a hostel in the capital Bishkek on May 17, assaulting foreign students following a brawl between several Kyrgyz men and foreigners days earlier. Despite the presence of police, the violence continued unchecked.

Imran Yousaf, a pathologist at the International University Kyrgyzstan, described the attack as a “terrifying moment” for the students, with barricaded entrances offering little protection against the assailants who assaulted several students, including women.

In response, the government of Pakistan has organized additional flights departing daily from Bishkek, providing an opportunity for students to return home, at least temporarily. Over the past few decades, Kyrgyzstan’s medical schools have attracted aspiring doctors from India, Pakistan, and other Asian and Arab countries due to affordable fees and living expenses.

While the Kyrgyz government has attempted to reassure foreign students and detained numerous suspected attackers, Imran Yousaf remains hopeful for their return, citing positive steps taken by the Kyrgyz authorities.
